The Federal Poverty Level (FPL) is a measure of income issued each year by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). It’s used to determine eligibility for certain programs, including Obamacare subsidies, Medicaid, and CHIP.
Your FPL percentage helps determine whether you qualify for premium tax credits, cost-sharing reductions, or Medicaid. In general, the lower your FPL percentage, the more financial help you may receive.
The FPL is based on your household size and annual income before taxes. Larger households have higher income limits for each FPL percentage.
HHS updates the FPL every January. New guidelines usually apply to Marketplace health plans starting the following open enrollment period.
For ACA purposes, the Marketplace uses Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI), which includes wages, self-employment income, unemployment benefits, Social Security, and other taxable income.
You can view the latest FPL guidelines on the HHS website, or simply use our calculator above for your household’s specific percentage.
